Cracking the Comparative Teacher Workshop

Charleville Park Hotel, County Cork
29th September 2018
9.30-1.00pm

Many teachers, whether newly qualified, or experienced, find that the Comparative Study is a very demanding, challenging area of the course. With this in mind, I have devised my workshops to offer practical advice for teaching this topic.

My Scene by Scene Teacher Workshops help teachers to teach the Comparative Study in a focused, structured way, that leads to exam preparation, rather then being governed by it.

My focus is on practical suggestions for classroom teaching to help prepare students for the exam and encourage students to cope with the challenge of this difficult question.

This presentation is ideal for new teachers and established teachers looking for new ideas to apply to their teaching.

What does the workshop involve?

The workshop follows an informal talk format, with myself, Amy Farrell, where I discuss the following topics answer questions attending teachers may have:

9.00 am Registration

  • 30 Choosing and combining comparative texts.
Choosing texts for your class group.
  • What to choose? What to avoid?
  • Looking at the 2020 list of prescribed texts.
  • 50 Teaching the comparative texts with a mode-based approach
Focusing on the modes while covering texts.
  • 20 Making meaningful notes and approaching longer answers.
Using graphic organisers, diagrams and charts to create student notes.

10.45 am Tea/Coffee Break.

11.15 Introducing the comparative modes

  • What does each mode cover?
  • Helping students understand the modes – using film/song to introduce comparative modes.
  • What are comparative skills? How to make meaningful comparisons and connections between texts.

12.00 Tackling exam questions.

  • What to focus on in exam answers?
  • Planning and preparing long answers in class.
  • Looking at the English Chief Examiner’s Report 2013
  • 30 Q&A

Teacher participation is encouraged and welcomed, but there is no groupwork component to the workshop, it follows a presented talk format. The workshop does not cover the marking of Leaving Certificate exam questions.
